Forced-air heating is an appliance that uses natural gas and conducts warm air through ductwork and vents to throughout your house. If you have circle or rectangle vents in your flooring or ceiling that blows air out of it, you have 'forced air' heating. Single Stage Furnace

This type of furnace is among the least expensive types of heating systems available to purchase due to its basic function and relatively inefficient energy consumption rate. The single stage furnace is named so due to the fact that it has a single gas flame that is either ignited when the unit is running, or extinguished when the unit is off. The unit switches on when the thermostat indicates the temperature has fallen below a desired level, and it remains on until the thermostat reads the temperature has reached the desired level.

2-Stage Furnace

2-Stage (dual stage) Gas Furnace Unlike the single stage unit, a two stage, or dual stage furnace system keeps a flame on at all times, even when the unit is on but not generating heat. This goes a long way towards improving the overall efficiency of this unit, and even allows the furnace to run more quietly, since it never needs to reignite the gas flame once it has been activated.

Variable (modulating) Furnace

The final major furnace model is known as a variable or modulating furnace. This furnace does a great job of maintaining a constant temperature throughout your property by making small, frequent temperature adjustments rather than waiting for the temperature to completely drop. As a result, these furnaces are among the most energy efficient models you can purchase today.
